EHC Red Bull München: An Interview with Dominik Kahun – Part 3
Dominik, when we look back on your early career, what really stands out are your attacking plays, dribbling, and speed. How would you describe yourself today compared to back then?
Dominik Kahun: “I’ve always been an offensive player, and that hasn’t changed. But when I compare myself today to the Dominik who was 15 years younger, I now bring a much more well-rounded skill set to the table. I’ve learned an incredible amount over the years and, above all, significantly improved my defensive play. My goal today is to be a complete player who brings many different qualities to the game.”

Where did this development into a more well-rounded player come from?
Kahun: “Mainly from the experiences I’ve been able to gain. When you watch players like Sidney Crosby, you quickly realize that the biggest stars are often also the hardest workers. That really shaped me. Today, it’s much more important to me to play a compact and versatile game than just to stand out offensively.”
Can you now pass these experiences on to the young players?
Kahun: “I hope so. I’ve been through many situations myself and believe that this allows me to help younger players. At the same time, there are also many strong leaders on our team from whom I can still learn. I’m someone who’s always open to new things.”
You mentioned leadership. What role do you want to take on in the team?
Kahun: “I want to contribute my experience and help us achieve our goals together. On the ice, I’ll try to help the team with my skills. But my role off the ice is just as important to me. I want to be there for the guys, support them in the locker room, and make a positive contribution as a person.”
Have you spoken with the coach yet?
Kahun: “We’ve already had some initial conversations, though that was before everything was finalized. Interestingly, I’d initially forgotten that he’d coached against us back in Biel and had even led his team to victory in our playoff series. The first talks were very positive, but we haven’t discussed specific roles or responsibilities yet.”
How important is it to you that you already know many of the players on the team?
Kahun: “That makes a lot of things easier. I’ve also been in situations where I joined a team via trade and knew practically no one. It’s different here. I have a long history with many of the guys. I’ve known Maxi Kastner in particular for many years. We’re constantly in touch, see each other regularly with the national team, and also spend time together in the summer.”
What are you especially looking forward to in Munich?
Kahun: “Munich is simply a fantastic city. Even though I’ve lived in some very beautiful places in Switzerland over the past few years, Munich is something special to me. I’m looking forward to the many great spots in the city, the English Garden, the cafés, and of course the restaurants. My girlfriend and I are big sushi fans, and Munich has a lot to offer in that regard.”
Who shows you the best new cafés and restaurants?
Kahun: “I rely entirely on Maxi Kastner for that. He really knows every corner of the city and is sure to show me some new favorite spots again.”
