Game summary
Coach Oliver David's team took control of the game from the first face-off. The first real danger came after just four minutes when Yasin Ehliz finished off a nice combination on the power play – Janick Schwendener made the save. In the ninth minute, the pressure became too much for the visitors: Ehliz won the puck in the forecheck and his pass in front of goal was confidently converted by Ferguson to make it 1-0. Dresden rarely showed up in attack after that. Munich's new goalie Antoine Bibeau had a quiet first period on his DEL debut, with no further goals scored.
In the second period, the league newcomers stepped up their game and the match was now more evenly balanced. There were no big chances at first – until, in the 28th minute, Ehliz once again found himself free to shoot after Ferguson's assist and forced Schwendener into a good save. Now it was blow after blow. In response, Bibeau made his best save against Austin Ortega to prevent the equalizer, while at the other end, Schwedener was on hand to deny Kastner (29th minute). Munich then picked up the pace, but at times played too frivolously. Not so in the 36th minute, when Heatherington simply shot from the blue line – and scored his first goal in the DEL. The score was 2-0 going into the second intermission.
In the final period, the Red Bulls controlled the game. The four-time German champions were closer to making it 3-0 than the visitors were to scoring their first goal. Munich only had to worry during a power play by the visitors. But because Bibeau reacted strongly against Andrew Yogan (53rd minute), among others, the two-goal lead held until the final phase. Trevor Parkes then made things exciting again with a goal (57th minute). The visitors put on the pressure with six field players, but Munich held on to their lead.
