Course of the game
After the first good chance by Wolfsburg's Matt White (1st), the Red Bulls got into the game better. Nevertheless, the Grizzlies scored the first goal when the puck luckily landed with Julian Chrobot, who gave Antoine Bibeau no chance (5th). Midway through the third period, the Red Bulls pushed for the equalizer. Oswald had one of several good opportunities, but there was no getting past Dustin Strahlmeier. In the final period, Wolfsburg were allowed to play twice in superior numbers: After the first opportunity went unused, Machacek deflected a pass with pinpoint accuracy (19th) to make it 2-0 at the break.
The game continued with intense ice hockey and Munich's superiority. Wolfsburg's offense was hardly able to develop, while the Red Bulls created numerous chances. However, Patrick Hager was not rewarded for a strong individual performance with the final goal (26'), and Munich also failed to score in three further overtime situations. The middle period ended goalless.
The Red Bulls also initially set the tone in the final period. In the 45th minute, Oliver David's team were able to celebrate: Oswald deflected a shot from Nikolaus Heigl to make it 1-2 and bring the four-time German champions back into contention. The visitors' run was only halted by a Wolfsburg power play in which Bibeau made a brilliant save against Gemel Smith (50'). Munich then went on the offensive again and created further good opportunities, but Strahlmeier kept a clean sheet until the final phase. The Wolfsburg goalkeeper was then beaten one minute before the siren: Ehliz scored a goal of will to equalize the score at 2:2 and force overtime.
The five-minute overtime went back and forth, but no goal was scored. The penalty shoot-out decided the game: Oswald secured the extra point for the Red Bulls.

Veit Oswald:
"It's not easy at the moment with all the injuries. So it's all the nicer to win a game like this. The coach found the right words in the first period break. After that, we were more disciplined and hardly conceded anything. That's why we deserved the win."
