DEL preview, match day 33: EHC Red Bull München visits Dresden
Unfortunately, Boxing Day did not end as hoped from Munich's perspective. In Friday evening's 1-3 defeat against the Frankfurt Lions, the Red Bulls not only left the ice without any points, but also saw two streaks come to an end. Coach Oliver David's team lost at the SAP Garden for the first time after ten consecutive home wins, and this was also their first defeat after eight consecutive victories.
The Dresdner Eislöwen, on the other hand, gave themselves and their fans an extra Christmas present. The bottom-of-the-table team secured their second consecutive home win with a 3-1 victory over the Augsburger Panther, keeping 13th place within reach.
“Our goal is to show a reaction.”
Our team has its sights firmly set on the top of the table. Only four points separate league leaders Cologne (68 points) and fifth-placed Munich (64).
“We made it difficult for ourselves right from the start. We couldn't get the puck past their defenders and tried to make a few more plays instead of keeping it simple and playing quickly up front,” said Yasin Ehliz after the game against Frankfurt.

“That's what has set us apart in recent weeks. But we've done well lately and need to put this game behind us quickly. Our goal is to respond immediately,” emphasized the Red Bulls forward.
Eislöwen show signs of life
And that should happen on Sunday in the Saxon capital. But our guys should be warned: the promoted team from Dresden seems to be finding its feet in the league and is not giving up the fight to stay up, despite being nine points adrift of safety. Under new coach Gerry Fleming, Dresden has picked up three wins in December.
Most recently, they not only defeated Augsburg at their home JOYNEXT Arena, but also beat ERC Ingolstadt, a real top team, 3-2. At the beginning of the month, the Ice Lions won in Augsburg and picked up a point in Ingolstadt at the end of November. So the Bavarian teams seem to suit the Ice Lions well in recent weeks.
Dresden's power play gets rolling
One reason for this, besides an overall improvement in defense, is that Dresden's power play has gained momentum. In the last four games, the Saxons have scored six times in nine opportunities, which is better than any other team in the league with at least one more player on the ice.

Lance Bouma in particular stood out with three power play goals, as did former Munich player Austin Ortega (two power play goals). Ortega is definitely one to watch. The American is one of the league's best forwards with 16 goals and nine assists to his name. That means he has been involved in more than a third of all Dresden's goals.
However, the forward failed to score against us in the first two games. Nevertheless, the two games were close, even though the Red Bulls ultimately prevailed 2-1 in Munich and 4-2 in Dresden.
